Like all new talents, hobbies, or endeavors a person may participate in, one is almost always really, really “shitty” at first. Anne Lamott’s Bird by Bird captures the reality of accepting how awful a first can be. I personally relate exactly to what she means by “shitty first drafts”. Drafting essays, papers, reflections, or any form of written word has never been my strong suit; I don’t know if it’s because I am lazy, a bad writer, or just generally overconfident in my first drafts. After reading this chapter, I feel better about my own writing abilities, knowing the importance of getting it all down on paper. I tried to blog once, but gave it up because the few posts I made were ineloquent ramblings. I now know that it is okay, even critical, to write bad first drafts because without them, you cannot grow as a writer, or in whatever skill you are participating in. I think it is important, especially now as a college student, to grow as a writer because most graded assignments in classes are large papers. Writing, in general, is challenging for me because I want it to be perfect, but there are always revisions to be made. I don’t think there is such thing as perfect writing, although I hope that I may come as close as possible this semester.
